Canal Barge Cruise Tips: A Traveler’s Guide

Following my memorable experience on a Canal Du Midi barge cruise with European Waterways aboard hotel barge Anjodi, I offer some tips to help you prepare for your barge cruise.

  1. Pack light layers, including rain gear While the weather was great in October, averaging between 17-21 degrees Celsius, it is important to pack layers since you will want to be sitting on the outdoor deck during the day and in the evenings. There is not much storage space in the cabin so it is important to pack light. Casual attire is worn all day and for meals. Most guests sport T-shirts, sweatshirts, pants and shorts.
  1. Wear proper deck shoes. Wear proper deck shoes with non-marking rubber soles for better grip on the deck, especially in wet and slippery conditions. Avoid flip-flops, as there are many steps inside and outside.
  1. Bring binoculars. There were many hikes and scenic lookouts at the locks along the Canal du Midi, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I found myself wishing I had brought binoculars to better enjoy the distant sights and wildlife.
  1. Pack a hat and sunscreen. Bring a wide brim hat or a ball cap to protect against the sun while on the rooftop, on the excursions, or for walks and cycling. Sunscreen is always a must!
  1. Pack comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. Sturdy shoes or boots for walking on cobblestone streets and sidewalks, and on the pathways and trails are required.
  1. Bring a converter for charging outlets. Pack a converter or a European plug to recharge your devices.

Pack a sense of adventure most importantly! You can purchase almost anything you might need in shops along the canals and in the towns and cities. I hope this helps you enjoy your next canal barge cruise adventure!
